B&O Railroad Museum – (15-20 minute car ride from conference hotel). The B&O Railroad Museum is known as the birthplace of American railroading – where the first stone of the railroad was laid, where the nation’s first mile of commercial railroad was constructed, and where the Mt. Fort McHenry Monument – (15-20 minute car ride from conference hotel) O! say can you see,…by the dawn’s early light, a large red, white and blue banner? Whose broad stripes and bright stars… were so gallantly streaming…over Fort McHenry! The valiant defense of the fort during the Battle of Baltimore on September 13-14, 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words that became the U.S. national anthem. Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park – The Frederick Douglass- Isaac Myers Maritime Park is a Living Classrooms Foundation campus (and headquarters) and national heritage site that celebrates the contributions of African Americans in the development of Baltimore’s maritime industry. The site honors and interprets the city’s African- American maritime history, while preserving one of the city’s oldest existing waterfront industrial buildings.

Maryland Zoo in Baltimore – (10-15 minute car ride from conference hotel) 10 AM – 4 PM. Features the Penguin Coast, the Zoo’s state-of-the-art exhibit for African penguins and other seabirds, opened in 2015 and received the AZA 2016 Award for Exhibit Design and the Northern Passage with grizzly bears, a bald eagle, and other animals found in the northern hemisphere. In 2019, the Zoo completed a historic renovation and expansion of the lion, giraffe, and elephant habitats in African Journey, marking a stunning transformation of its largest exhibit area. Walters Art Museum – (10 min car ride from conference hotel) Located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood, the museum’s campus includes five historic buildings and 36,000 art objects.
